These classic Red Velvet Cupcakes are ideal for any occasion. They're sure to please with a moist, velvety crumb and a rich buttercream frosting.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
  • Prepare a muffin pan with paper liners.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.
  • Cream the butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
  • One at a time, add the eggs, beating well after each addition.
  • Combine the vanilla extract and red food coloring in a mixing bowl.
  • In two additions, add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk and mixing well after each addition.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full.
  • Bake the cupcakes for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.
  • Prepare the frosting while the cupcakes are cooling.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter until it is light and fluffy.
  • Mix in the confectioners' sugar, milk, and vanilla extract gradually until the frosting is smooth and creamy.
  • Once the cupcakes have completely cooled, generously frost them with the buttercream frosting and sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles.
