- Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt in a medium mixing bowl.
- Cream the butter and granulated sugar together in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition.
- To make a paste, combine the cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and red food coloring in a small bowl.
- Mix the cocoa mixture into the butter mixture until thoroughly combined.
- In three parts, add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk and vinegar.
- Mix until everything is thoroughly combined.
- Mix the baking powder and vinegar in a small bowl before adding it to the batter.
- Combine thoroughly.
- Line a muffin pan with cupcake liners and fill each liner halfway with batter.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Allow the cupcakes to cool completely after removing them from the oven.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter until it is smooth.
- Mix in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until thoroughly combined.
- Add just enough milk to make the frosting spreadable.
